PROUST MAGAZINE
Print Photography
One of my most cherished experiences.
Proust was a student ran magazine at James Madison University. I applied to work as one of the photographers my sophomore year at BRCC and got the position.
During the last issue, I was promoted to head photographer of the magazine. I had never worked in the magazine industry before so getting to experience this for the first time was super cool.
In total I worked on four shoots during my time with Proust : a Y2K inspired in-house shoot, staging the Vol. 2 No. 1 Winter '22 cover, content for the spring blooms spread, and the cover for Vol. 2 No. 2 Spring '23.
VOL 2. ISSUE 1.
In this issue, the overall theme was reminiscing on the past trends, both good and bad. This was inspired by the name of the magazine "Proust" as well as majority of the staff being graduating in the semester that followed the release of this issue.
I had the privilege of working with a writer that focused on the resurfacing of the Y2K clothing trend, as well as the staging of the cover photo.
Y2K PIECE
I worked I collaborated with another photographer on the team, Anelise Johnson to bring the writing to life through the spreads images.
I also got to dip back into my creative portrait photography to put together a successful Y2K inspired shoot.
Big shout out to our two models that were easy to work with and open to experimenting with posing!
VOL 2. ISSUE 2.
In this issue, the overall theme was building connections and welcoming new conversations, specifically around a table. This was a bitter sweet issue to work on, as majority of the members of this magazine were graduating a few short weeks after the release of this final print. They would be stepping away from the table they built during their time at JMU and set out to find a new one.
COVER WORK
This was my first assignment for the magazine since being promoted to head photographer. I met up with the editor and chief of the magazine to talk about any specific staging she would like to see and from there got to work behind the camera. The costume design and props were all so fun to manipulate through different shots.
During the shoot I was asked to capture a handful of shots that would specifically be used as the main cover, then also making sure I capture a handful that could be used promotionally or potentially elsewhere in the magazine.
This was a personal favorite from the shoot.
I enjoy how this image shows each element of the shoot at a closer range.
When looking to do extra, promotional shots, I looked to including detail shots like this.
Another personal favorite. I enjoy how it can be interpreted a couple different ways.
A close second for the pose and staging of the cover
The photo we ended up picking for the cover. The interaction between our model and the flowers was the deciding factor.
This was the second edit option.
